How Do I Cancel a New York Power of Attorney?

A New York Power of Attorney can be cancelled at any time by giving written notice to the attorney-in-fact.

It’s best to keep records of sending the notice in case issues arise later on. A good way is to send a copy of the notice by email, so that you can later produce the message as evidence of cancelling the power of attorney.

Using a cancelled power of attorney is illegal. If you suspect that the person will use the power of attorney  after you’ve cancelled it, it’s a good idea to notify banks and other entities or individuals that the power of attorney is cancelled.

If you wish to speak to a New York estate attorney, call the Law Offices of Albert Goodwin at (212) 233-1233.
